450 Short D Sound Words:
Note: These 450 entries are grouped for phonics practice, but some are longer words, repeated words, inflected forms, or words in which the letter d does not represent the same short /d/ sound in every pronunciation.
400 Long D Sound Words:
Note: The letter D usually makes the consonant sound /d/, as in dog and door. For this list, I’ve grouped words with long vowel sounds and common D spelling families, including -ade, -aid, -ide, -ode, -ude, -ed, -eed, -ied, -old, and -ound. Some words are longer than one syllable.
Phonics reminder: “Long D” is not a standard phonics category in English. The /d/ sound itself does not have a long version; long A, long E, long I, long O, and long U refer to vowel sounds. This list groups common D-containing words by spelling patterns and vowel sounds for practice.
